Jim's Business Experience

Jim Travis worked for over 30 years as a manager/supervisor. Jim was known for thinking very logically and implementing effective and efficient business solutions to problems or potential problems. Initially, the solutions involved efficient manual systems due to the lack of available computer systems. As computers were deployed, Jim was a champion of the new computer technology and implemented solutions utilizing mini-computers, PC's, and ultimately PDA's. A small sample of Jim's business solutions are:
- A manual solution for organizing essential records that needed to be found quickly. Before implementation, records were basically unorganized and difficult to locate. After Jim's solution, records could be obtained in less than a minute. The solution involved a system for the filing of new records, maintenance of existing records, and elimination of outdated records.
- A VAX solution that enabled the elimination of a dozen file cabinets and the need to sort thousands of training records manually each year. Jim's solution was the first in the company to get official headquarter's permission to replace the mandatory manual training record keeping system with an automated system.
- An Apple IIe based bulletin board system (this was pre-WWW) to allow app. two hundred training managers nationwide to exchange information and avoid "reinventing the wheel" solutions. Jim's BBS was also the only data system in the company to receive permission to utilize the proprietary telephone voice system which eliminated long distance charges. The BBS included file upload/download, forums, voting, and the first email system in the company. The corporate software could not support BBS or email functions at the time. Jim purchased the BBS software with his personal funds, implemented the system, and maintained the software.
- A DBase (migrated to FoxPro) contract training database that allowed the elimination of $50,000 in training reports from a major training contract.
- A Palm OS® and Windows Mobile solution (I now have extensive experience with Android, and iOS as well; however, Android, and iOS did not exist at the time) which involved downloading training data via Crystal Reports from a proprietary Pathlore database. Appropriate employee training records and future training schedule were available on the PDA using Handbase, a cross platform database solution for PDA's. With this data, Jim and others were able to answer employee questions concerning training requirement progress and future class schedules even in the field when a connected PC was not available.
